From our Travels

A curation of 23 items from 3 unique travel destinations.

Sabahs were, in part, created with travel in mind. From the very beginning we were on the road -- by plane, by train, by automobile -- visiting cities small and large to set up temporary ‘Sabah Houses’ wherein we’d present our latest Sabah and Baba styles, meet, greet & fit our customer.

In our free time, we'd explore and connect with the local community of makers, creators, chefs and general doers. Along the way I always collected mementos to bring back with me -- accessories from shops, cookbooks from chefs/restaurants, home goods and more. My favorite way to shop is during my travels -- stumbling upon an unexpected gem without, and leaving with a treasured item and usually a great memory too.

This past year we didn’t travel at all, but we chose three travel destinations that share a connection with Sabah, and curated items we would have brought back from each of those places: New York City, Texas and Japan.

New York

Arguably the greatest city in the world and home to our first-ever Sabah House East Village.

New York City is our backyard -- a city that keeps us on our toes and constantly inspired with it's ever-evolving, fast paced creative scene. Walking the streets of New York, you never know what to expect: who you'll meet, what you'll learn, and where it'll take you! Among other items, we've included a cookbook by Estela, a restaurant down the street from Sabah Studio where Ignacio Mattos serves up some of the best plates in the city, home goods by Brooklyn-based Dusen Dusen, who I met years ago and have always admired, and a bucket hat by Savant Studios -- designed by Michael Graham, a new friend who is quickly becoming one of our favorite collaborators.

Texas

A vast and ever-changing land of creatives, makers and entrepreneurs!

Texas is my home state although I haven't lived there for 16 years now. When I travel back, whether to visit family or check in on Sabah House Dallas, I'm also amazed by the growing community of artists, makers and creatives full of that Texan can-do spirit and a whole lot of charm. Texas is changing fast and we're excited to present some of our favorite items from our times there; like the iconic robes from the El Cosmico Hotel, soaps by Wonder Valley - who just setup shop in West Texas, and one-of-a-kind ceramics by Houston-based artist, Gabo Martini. Yeehaw!

Japan

Where the first pair of Beirut Black Sabahs still resides.

Japan is top of my list when travel is more accessible. I haven’t been for years, but I hold fond memories of my time in Tokyo, indulging in the incredible gastronomy scene, walking the myriad neighborhoods to discover store after store that blew my mind with their take on merchandising, and being so humbled and inspired by their hospitality and service. The appreciation and respect for what I would call ceremony, but also craft, really marked me when I visited Japan. I can't wait to get back. We've curated plant-based candles from Takazawa, indigo kimonos and a book called Wabi-Sabi which has greatly influenced our approach at Sabah. We have a few more goods in transit too, but we couldn't wait any longer to get going!
